Bird Watching

Sauvie Island Wildlife Area
"Conditions fluctuate with the seasons and migratory patterns. Late winter and early spring are excellent for viewing waterfowl. Bald eagles are usually spotted in the winter as they feed on the weaker waterfowl. Over 250 species of birds can be seen on the island throughout the year."

Audobon Society Nature Sanctuary
A 143-acre, free-to-the-public Nature Sanctuary next to Forest Park and nestled amongst old growth Douglas Firs. "Look for Steller's Jay, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Varied Thrush, Mourning Dove, Pacific Giant Salamander, and Douglas Squirrel, as well as Roughskin Newt, Red-legged Frog and Western Painted Turtle in the pond."

Vaux Chimney Swifts at Chapman Elementary School
Tens of thousands of swifts arrive in Portland in September and roost in the chimney at Chapman School in northwest Portland during their migration to Central America and Venezuela, making it the largest known roost of migrating swifts in the world! The birds swirl in the sky before descending into the chimney at sunset. An absolute must-see!
